What to Do When the Snow Melts: Preparing Your Lawn for Spring

Did you know that the first day of spring for 2021 is March 20? Granted, there's still a bit of time before the new season. But that doesn't mean you should wait until then to start fixing up your yard!

In fact, there are some things you should do as end of winter lawn care to get ready for new life.

Are you now wondering about preparing your lawn for spring? Then read on. We'll give you some quick tips here!

Clean up Your Yard

Because it's been so cold, you might've neglected your lawn a bit. Considering nothing really grows over the winter, this is forgivable.

But before the seasons change, you should do some pre-spring cleaning. Remove all debris such as leaves and twigs. Use an air blower to make things go quicker.

Rake Your Grass

Have you been thinking: What should I do for my lawn when the snow melts? Then raking your grass should be the first item on your list!

Raking can do several things for your lawn. For one, you'll get rid of thatch, which is the unattractive dried grass you see on your lawn. Raking can also help get rid of snow mould.

Raking your grass will also "wake it up." This encourages growth once spring arrives!

Fertilize Your Lawn

At the very start of spring, apply fertilizer to your lawn. Your grass will soon shoot up, which means you want to give them as much fuel to do so as possible.

Some good options are mulching mowers and compost. There are also some good chemical fertilizers, like Miracle-Grow.

Whatever you choose, make sure you do a lighter feeding rather than a heavy one. This is especially true if you've already fertilized your lawn in late fall.

Trim Your Trees and Shrubs

Spring is the season of growth, but that can only happen if your plants are properly prepped. Not only should you take care of your grass, but you should also give your trees and shrubs a little trim.

The main goal of doing this is to get rid of dead growth so your plants can focus solely on producing new growth.

Double-Check Your Lawnmower

Your lawnmower has probably been sitting in the shed over the winter. But when spring comes, you can bet that it'll get plenty of use!

Make sure spring lawn care is easy by double-checking your lawnmower at the end of winter. Start it up to see if it goes smoothly.

If needed, perform a tune-up. And if your lawnmower seems like it's worse for wear, considering researching and buying a new one that'll make lawn care easy come spring.
